    This one is different. We work with both platforms. We’ve migrated organizations from WordPress to Drupal and from old Drupal versions to new ones. The honest answer is that both platforms are genuinely good at what they were built for — and genuinely wrong for the other platform's use case.

    Here’s the real comparison, with current numbers.

    Market Share: The Number That Misleads

    WordPress powers 43.5% of all websites and holds 60% of the CMS market (W3Techs, 2026). Drupal accounts for approximately 1% of all websites.

    That looks decisive. It isn’t, for the organizations that matter most to this comparison.

    Among the top 10,000 websites by traffic, Drupal’s share rises to 7.2%, while WordPress’s share is 49.4%. That’s a 7x gap between Drupal’s overall share and its share among high-traffic sites. The organizations running at the highest volumes, with the most complex requirements and the strictest compliance needs, choose Drupal at a rate that its overall numbers don’t reflect.

    WordPress was built to make publishing easy. Drupal was built to make complex content structures manageable. Those different starting points still determine everything — from how each platform handles user permissions to how they respond to a security incident.

    Security: Where the Real Difference Lives

    Security is the comparison that matters most for regulated industries, and the one most often oversimplified.

    WordPress Security

    WordPress core is secure. Only 6 of 11,334 ecosystem vulnerabilities in 2024 were found in WordPress core itself (Patchstack, 2026). The problem is the ecosystem around it.

    In 2024, nearly 8,000 new vulnerabilities were discovered in the WordPress ecosystem — a 34% increase over 2023. Of these, 96% were in third-party plugins. And 43% were exploitable without any authentication required (Acquia, 2026).

    Plugin vulnerabilities account for 55.9% of all known WordPress entry points for attackers (Wordfence). WordPress accounts for 74% of hacked CMS websites in Sucuri’s analysis — nearly 15 percentage points above its market share of 59.8%. That gap is the ecosystem risk made visible.

    An enterprise WordPress site running 30 plugins is running 30 separate security postures, each maintained by a different developer. A neglected plugin from 2021 is still installed in 2026 on thousands of sites. That’s the actual attack surface.

    Drupal Security

    Drupal’s security model is architecturally different from WordPress’s. The Drupal Security Team formally reviews contributed modules before they receive security advisory coverage. Twig templating auto-escapes output by default, preventing common injection attacks. Role-based permission management is granular and built into core, not bolted on.

    Drupal accounts for only 2% of hacked websites in Sucuri’s analysis — well below its market share. Government agencies, universities, and healthcare organizations choose Drupal specifically because this model is easier to audit for compliance.

    The trade-off is real: Drupal’s smaller ecosystem means fewer plugin options for quick feature additions. But fewer third-party dependencies means less attack surface and more predictable security posture.

    Performance: Both Can Scale — At Different Cost

    A well-configured WordPress site on quality hosting performs at enterprise scale. A poorly configured one with 40 plugins loading competing scripts does not. The platform can do it — but the configuration burden is higher.

    Drupal 11 delivers meaningful out-of-the-box performance improvements: 1/3 fewer database and cache lookups compared to Drupal 11.0, Brotli compression, and significantly faster page loads on equivalent hardware. For content-heavy sites with complex queries across multiple content types, Drupal typically requires less custom configuration to perform at scale.

    Total Cost of Ownership: The Five-Year Picture

    WordPress wins on upfront cost — more developers, cheaper hosting, faster build. For a standard site, that advantage is real and meaningful.

    The five-year picture is more complicated. WordPress sites with active plugin ecosystems require ongoing maintenance overhead that compounds: plugin updates that break things, security patches that need testing, third-party dependencies going unmaintained.

    Organizations in regulated industries consistently find that Drupal’s higher upfront cost produces lower total cost over five years — primarily because security incidents don’t happen at the same rate, and because the maintenance model is more predictable. The organizations that regret choosing Drupal are usually small teams that didn’t need its complexity. The organizations that regret choosing WordPress are usually those handling sensitive data who didn’t account for the plugin maintenance overhead.

    Choose WordPress if your organization needs fast deployment, your content requirements are standard, your team has limited technical resources, and your compliance requirements are manageable with a maintained plugin stack and a security-focused host. For 80% of websites, this is the right answer.

    Choose Drupal if your organization handles sensitive data, faces HIPAA, GDPR, or SOC 2 requirements, manages complex content across multiple sites or languages, or operates in government, healthcare, or higher education, where the cost of a security incident is measured in regulatory exposure and reputational damage, not just recovery time.

    The mistake most teams make is choosing the wrong platform for hypothetical future requirements. Choose based on where you actually are.

    Is Drupal more secure than WordPress in 2026?

    Drupal’s core security architecture is stronger by design — built-in access control, Twig auto-escaping, and formal module vetting. WordPress core is also secure, but plugin vulnerabilities account for 55.9% of all known attack entry points. For regulated industries, Drupal’s model is easier to audit. For standard business sites with a maintained plugin stack, WordPress is fully reliable.

    Why does Drupal have only 1% market share if it's better for enterprise?

The platform holds 7.2% of the world’s top 10,000 websites by traffic. The ‘Drupal is dying’ claim has been made consistently since approximately 2012. The enterprise adoption numbers have not borne it out.
